I recently embarked on a delightful crocheting journey, creating the Textured Crochet Diamond Weave Baby Blanket—a project perfect for beginners and seasoned crafters alike. Inspired by the Diamond Weave Throw pattern from Daisy Farm Crafts, this blanket features a simple, two-row repeat that anyone can pick up quickly.

I chose to work with Caron Baby Cakes Yarn in the lovely Pool Party shade for this project, but really, any color would look just as stunning. For the border, I opted for a straightforward yet elegant design.

I started with two rows of single crochets, added a dash of whimsy with a row of “dots” using the popcorn stitch, and finished it off with another two rows of single crochets. The result? A wide, attractive border that was not only easy to complete but also added a perfect finishing touch to my cozy creation. For the blanket pattern, you’ll need to head over to Daisy Farm Crafts and view her Crochet Diamond Weave Throw (there is a PDF pattern you can download), or watch the video below.

Edging: The pattern works up with nice, straight edges. If you are going to add a border, I always recommend going around your blanket with one row of single crochet or half double crochets to give a nice starting base for your border. In this case, since the first border row is a row of half double crochets, I skipped this step and went right into working the border.

Half Double Crochet Popcorn instructions

Work 3 half double crochets into the same stitch. Drop the working loop from your hook and reinsert into the top of your first half double crochet. Pick up the last half double crochet with your hook. Yarn over with white and pull through all stitches on your hook.

Row 1: Join with a standing half double crochet in any stitch at the top of the project (or join with a slip stitch and chain 2). Half double crochet in the next stitch and each stitch across until you reach the corner. Work three half double crochets into the corner. Continue working half double crochets down the side, placing them as evenly as possible. Continue working half double crochets evenly around the project, working three half double crochets in each corner. Join with a slip stitch to first half double crochet.

💡TIP: I found that two half double crochets per row worked well for me on this pattern.

Row 2: Chain 2 and work a half double crochet in the next stitch and each stitch across until you reach the corner. Work three half double crochets into the corner. Continue around and join with a slip stitch to your starting half double crochet.

Row 3: Chain 2 and work a half double crochet in the next two stitches. Pickup your your contrasting color and work a half double crochet popcorn into the next stitch, switching to white as you pull through. *Half double crochet in the next three stitches, popcorn in the next.* Repeat from * until you are close to the corner. As you approach each corner, I tried to ensure that the popcorns stopped at least 3 stitches away from the corner stitch, and started again at least three stitches after the corner stitch. Remember to work 3 half double crochets in each corner stitch. Continue to repeat this pattern around your blanket.

On the last side, once you come around the corner, I counted back from my first popcorn to determine where to start the first popcorn after rounding that final corner. This ensured that my popcorns would be placed evenly on that side.

Rows 4 & 5: Repeat row 2
