I’m excited to share my latest crochet pattern with you – a modern granny stripe crochet blanket. Whether you’re new to crocheting or looking for a quick and easy project, you’re in the right place!

Crochet Skills Needed
I would consider this a beginner level pattern. It is a simple repeat and very easy to complete once you get the hang of it. If you follow my color scheme, you’ll also be a pro at weaving in ends by the time you are done with the blanket!
In order to complete this blanket, you will need to either know or be willing to learn the following crochet concepts:
- Chain, single crochet, and double crochet stitches.
- Joining new colors at the end of a row.
- Weaving in ends
I used my easy crochet ruffle border for this blanket and those instructions are in a separate post but included as part of the .pdf download below. You can use any border you like to finish your project.
Stiches for the Crochet Striped Modern Granny Blanket
Chain (ch)
- Yarn over (yo)
- Pull through loop
Single Crochet (sc)
- Insert hook under both top loops of the stitch you are working into.
- Yarn over (yo)
- Pull through the stitch (there should now be two loops on your hook)
- Yarn over (yo)
- Pull through both loops on your hook.
Materials
You can use any weight, color, or brand of yarn to complete this project. You’ll want to be sure to pick the right sized hook for whatever yarn you choose. Here are the supplies I used:
Variation A:
- Size J (6.0 mm) Crochet Hook (I love this set from Amazon.com)
- Yarn Needle
Quantities for each color depends on size. I used 1 jumbo skein or 2 regular skeins of each color for these larger blankets approximately 45″-50″ wide x 60″ long.
Free Pattern for the Modern Granny Stripe Crochet Blanket
Skill Level: Beginner
Finished Size: Varies
You can completely customize this blankets size by using a starting chain with any multiple of 3+2. I used a starting chain of 125 for an approximately 45″ wide blanket.
💡 TIP: For the starting chain and row 1 I always will use the edging color. In these instructions, white is the edging color, as shown in the two blankets above, but, if your edging is one of the colors, you can create the starting chain and row 1-4 with the same color.
Row 1: Skip 2 chains and double crochet in 3rd chain from hook. (Skipped chains count as first double crochet). Continue to place 1 double crochet in each chain until you reach the end of the row. Change to color A at end of row.
Row 2: Chain 3 and turn. *Skip 2 stitches and place granny cluster in the next stitch.* Repeat from * until you have 3 stitches remaining. Chain 1 and place a double crochet in the top of the last stitch.
Row 3: Chain 3 and turn. Place 2 double crochets into chain 1 space. This chain 3 and 2 double crochets count as a granny cluster. Place a granny cluster in the space between granny clusters in the row below. Repeat until end of row. Last granny cluster placed between the chain 3 and the 1st granny cluster from the previous row.
Row 4: Chain 3 and turn. *Skip 2 stitches and place granny cluster in the space between granny clusters in the row below.* Repeat from * until you have 3 stitches remaining. Chain 1 and place a double crochet in the top of the last stitch.
Row 5: Switch to Main Color. Chain 3 and turn. Place one double crochet in the chain 1 space from the row below. *Place a double crochet in the top of the next two stitches. Place a double crochet in the space between granny clusters.* Repeat from * until you reach the last granny cluster. Place one double crochet in the top of each of the first two stitches in the granny cluster. Place a double crochet in the space between the granny cluster and the chain 3. Place the last double crochet in the top of the starting chain 3 of the row below. Change to next color at end of row.
Rows 6+: Repeat rows 2 – 5 until your project is the size you want it to be.
Last Row: You can end your project at any point however, I always end in white if I’m edging in the main color. If you are edging in one of your other colors, complete the repeat of three rows of granny clusters. Do not switch to main color, instead, work row 5 in the same color. Finish off and weave in all ends.
Edging: Join with edging color in the top of any stitch. Work a single crochet in each stitch until you reach the corner. Work 3 single crochets in the corner. Place single crochets evenly down the sides (for my yarn and tension, I found 2 single crochets per row worked out well). Continue working 3 single crochets for each corner and evenly placing stitches. Finish off with a slip stitch when you reach your starting single crochet.
Border
The single crochet edging can be left as-is or, you can use that as a base to add any border you desire. I’ve made projects using this pattern multiple times, each time adding a different border. Here are a few of my favorites:
- Easy Ruffle Border – Join with slip stitch into the top of any stitch. Chain 1 (does not count as a stitch). Single crochet in next stitch. Chain 1, skip 1 stitch, single crochet in the next stitch.
- Single Crochet V-Stitch Border – Join with slip stitch in the top of any stitch. Chain 1 (does not count as a stitch). Work 2 single crochets in next stitch, chain 1, skip 1 stitch, work 2 single crochets in next stitch. Repeat from * until you reach your first single crochet. Join with slip stitch to first single crochet.
- Front Post Back Post Ribbed Border
Color Sequence
The color sequence I used for this blanket is:
- Turquoise (3 rows)
- White (1 row)
- Dark Pink (3 rows)
- White (1 row)
- Light Pink (3 rows)
- White (1 row)
- Gold (3 rows)
- White (1 row)
The pattern repeats from there alternating 3 rows of color with 1 row of white. Download the written pattern to get a coloring sheet you can use to plan your blanket.
